Mayme Stocker

Childhood

Mamie was born on September 5, 1875, in reading, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Anna may and George Clifton. 

The girl had five brothers and sisters. She was the eldest child in the family and helped raise the younger ones. Mamie hadn't finished school when their mother died. Since then, she has done all the basic women's housework.

Career

Consider the key milestones in Mamie Stoker's career: 

• In 1911, Mamie came to Las Vegas, where her husband got a job on the railroad.
• In 1920, Stoker founded the Northern Club, located on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. The establishment became a local landmark and was very popular. 
• In 1931, she obtained a gambling license and opened a casino in the club, in which five types of poker were available.
  Until the mid-forties, the casino changed its name several times. Mamie was gradually moving away from the gambling business, handing over management to her sons.
• In 1945, the owner of the club was Wilbur Clark. 

Mamie Stoker lived in Las Vegas for the rest of her life. She took an active part in social and political life and was a member of the Republican party. She was also a member of Daughters of the American Revolution.

She died in 1972 at the age of 97.

Personal life

At sixteen, Mamie married Oscar Stocker. They had three sons: Lester, Harold, and Clarence. They also worked at the casino club.

• Mamie Stoker went down in casino history as the owner of the first official gambling license in Nevada.
• They say that my husband did not want to make a casino for himself, so as not to discredit his good name with a connection with gambling.
